Teenagers
When parents separate, it can shake a teenager’s world. In therapy, your teen gets a safe space to talk openly without feeling like they have to take sides or protect anyone’s feelings.
We work on helping them name and understand what they’re feeling, whether that’s sadness, anger, confusion, or even relief. They’ll learn healthy coping tools for stress, adjust more easily to new routines, and build confidence in who they are.
We also focus on easing feelings of guilt or responsibility, improving communication with both parents, and giving them hope that life can still feel stable, connected, and maybe even calmer after this big change.

Though therapy addresses the immediate ramifications of divorce, it also serves to help teenagers in the future. Future consequences considered in therapy include:

Developmental Challenges
-
Delays in emotional maturity due to instability or stress.
-
Difficulty forming a stable sense of identity.
-
Struggles with independence if they feel they need to “parent” themselves or siblings.

Long-Term Risks
-
Ongoing trust issues in relationships.
-
Fear of commitment or avoidance of long-term relationships.
-
Chronic stress leading to mental health concerns like depression or anxiety.
Therapy is often helpful for teenagers experiencing divorce, but may be especially so if the following has developed during shortly after separation:
Emotional Effects
-
Increased sadness, grief, or feelings of loss.
-
Anger or resentment toward one or both parents.
-
Anxiety about the future or changes in family structure.
-
Guilt or self-blame for the divorce.
-
Feeling torn between parents or caught in the middle.
Behavioral Changes
-
Withdrawal from family or friends.
-
Acting out, defiance, or risky behaviors.
-
Drop in school performance or loss of motivation.
-
Changes in eating or sleeping patterns.
Social Impacts
-
Strained peer relationships.
-
Trouble trusting others in friendships or romantic relationships.
-
Avoidance of social situations due to embarrassment or stress.
Developmental Challenges
-
Delays in emotional maturity due to instability or stress.
-
Difficulty forming a stable sense of identity.
-
Struggles with independence if they feel they need to “parent” themselves or siblings.

Beneath their tough exterior, teenagers are simply trying to
find their place in the world.
We can support them in this journey.
